Pirate golf team hosts tournament today

Staff Writer

With three tournaments under their belts already this season, the Pagosa Springs High School golf team is bringing the action home today (Thursday).

Although school has not yet started for the student athletes, they have completed about one-third of their regular-season schedule.

Ten students are on the team for the 2013 season, led by seniors Casey Mudroch and Jaylon Ochoa.

Joining the seniors are juniors Jake Keuning, Bryce Jacquez, Taylor Heitz and Trey Spears.

The sole sophomore on the team is Ty Schofield, and the freshmen rounding out the team are Joseph Rivera, Owen Severs and Ben Pargin.

The team began its season on Aug. 14 at Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City, at the Pueblo Centennial Tournament.

At that tournament, the Pirates finished in the middle of the pack of 18 teams on the par-71 course.

In the tournament, five Pirate golfers took part, led by Ochoa, who shot an 85. Following Ochoa, Mudroch shot a 90, Kuening ended with a 93, Jacquez finished with a 101, and Heitz shot a 106.

“For the first tournament of the year, I was proud of them,” coach Mark Faber said. “They did pretty well.”

The tournament also gave the team an early look at where the regional tournament will be held at the end of the season, Faber said.

Two days later, the team took part in the first league tournament of the season at Cattails Golf Course in Alamosa.

Ochoa again led the team at the tournament, shooting an 88, followed by Mudroch’s 94, Keuning’s 96 and Jacquez’s 99.

The Pirates again finished in the middle of the pack, this time amidst about 15 teams.

With one tournament under the team’s belt, Faber said he expected the golfers do to better, but was not disappointed by the performance, adding that it helped the team figure out what to work on.

Yesterday, Aug. 21, the team headed to the Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez for the Montezuma-Cortez High School tournament. Results for that tournament were not available by press time Wednesday and will be reported next week.

Today, the team hosts its only home tournament of the season at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club, and the tournament is open to spectators — with spectators encouraged by Faber.

“We appreciate that the golf course lets us do it,” Faber noted.

The tournament kicks of at 9 a.m.

The schedule for the remainder of the season is as follows:
