The Pirate boys’ basketball team played a first-round nailbiter against Colorado Academy at the state tournament this morning
At times, it seemed Pagosa had control of the action. The Pirates led 11-6 after a sluggish first quarter, began to get in tune in the second quarter and held a slim 27-24 lead at the half.
The Pirates went somewhat cold again in the third, with two long possessions and no points, then began to light up, with Kain Lucero hitting two three-point shots. A turnover and a layup off the transition put Pagosa comfortably ahead 37-28. The nine-point lead continued to the end of the quarter with Pagosa topping the Mustangs 42-31.
At that point, things got tight and the fourth quarter provided fans with all they could handle. The Mustangs managed a run to close the gap to 44-39 with six minutes remaining. With two and a half minutes left, Colorado Academy had closed within two, at 48-46, and the Mustangs took their first lead in the game with a three-pointer 16 seconds later.
Pagosa recaptured the lead, 51-49, with 31 seconds on the clock. Lucero thwarted the Mustang double-team time and again, finding the open man, but CA made it a 52-51 game with six seconds left.
Lucero missed the front end of a 1-and-1 but Pagosa managed the offensive board. Lucero was fouled again, hit both free throws and the Pirates emerged from the first round of the tournament with a thrilling 54-51 win.
Pagosa now advances to tomorrow’s semifinal to play the winner of today’s game pitting Eaton and Holy Family.
