Pile burns planned for Turkey Springs area

The Pagosa Ranger District is planning to burn approximately 400 slash pile in the Turkey Springs area northwest of Pagosa Springs beginning today, Thursday, Jan. 25. The piles consist of slash thinned from hazardous fuels-reduction projects. This is part of a larger project involving prescribed fire, mechanical thinning and mowing in the Turkey Springs/Brockover Mesa areas. An additional slash pile at the Forest Service Work Center on Piedra Road will also be burned. Pile burning only takes place when there is sufficient snow on the ground to prevent fire creep.
