Girls who will be entering grades five through eight have another opportunity to become members of the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir (PSGC) for the 2017-2018 school year.

A final audition before school starts will be held on Aug. 24 in the Pagosa Springs Middle School (PSMS) band room at 7 p.m.

Any girl wishing to audition that cannot attend the Aug. 24 date can schedule a separate audition by calling Director Linda Parker at the number below.

For the audition, girls will be asked to sing “America” (“My Country ’tis of Thee”) without accompaniment. They will also be asked to echo-sing simple melodic patterns and echo-clap rhythmic patterns.

The PSGC has just completed its fourth year and is looking forward to its fifth landmark year. This year will bring many exciting opportunities for the girls in celebration of this milestone. This past year, the girls performed at many events, including the Veterans Day Breakfast, the Sullivan Foundation fundraiser in Durango, their own Over the Rainbow fundraising event and two major concerts. The choir has become known as an exciting musical group in our community.

The PSGC also offers a summer activity designed to enrich the arts education of each girl. The girls recently returned from Salt Lake City, Utah, where they spent four days touring Temple Square, seeing organ concerts, attending a rehearsal of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and finishing their trip attending a performance of Paula Abdul and Boyz II Men.

The choir year will begin on Aug. 28 with a choir camp to help the girls get a head start on the year’s repertoire. The girls will meet each day (Aug. 28-31) from 9 to 11 a.m. Regular rehearsals for the choir are held on Monday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. in the PSMS band room, with the first rehearsal taking place on Sept. 11.

The tuition fee for the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir is $200 per year for each girl, and the $10 audition fee will be applied to the payment. A payment plan for the tuition will be offered and scholarships are also available.

Parker, said, “No child will be turned away due to an inability to pay. If there is a need for financial assistance, we will help the family find it.”

Parker added that girls in the choir learn to perform high-quality choral music in a variety of styles. Some music includes choreography and props.

“They spend a great deal of time on vocal and choral techniques, but the girls also concentrate on stage presence and musicianship,” Parker said. “We will be celebrating our fifth year next year with many exciting opportunities for the girls. It’s a perfect time for girls to become a member of this outstanding group. We hope that Pagosa’s young girls will be a part of this exciting musical journey.”
