Join the Pagosa Nordic Club and Colorado Mountain Mushers for the third annual Pagosa Paw on Feb. 23-24.
This winter dog sports event includes spectacular dog sled racing as well as Nordic skiing.
Races start at 9 a.m. both days and include a six-dog, six-mile sled race, a four-dog, four-mile sled race, a three-mile skijor race (dog pulls you on skis), a three-mile cani-cross race (dog pulls you on snowshoes) and a three-mile freight event.
There is also a Sportsman Class offering a one-mile course for those who just want to try it out.
Cash prizes are awarded for competitive entries (based on a combined score in racing both days) and ribbons for Sportsman participants along with a drawing for additional prizes.
Races will be held at the Kuhn Ranch, located eight miles north of U.S. 160 on Piedra Road. Look for the red barn with spectacular views. The Kuhn Ranch provides a great venue for racers and spectators, with excellent views of the entire course and Pagosa Peak as the backdrop.
Arrive early, as the dogs run fast and the exciting sled races are first on each day’s schedule.
To register, call Jennifer Martin at 264-9358 or visit colomtnmushers.org. You can also visit pagosanordic.com for trail grooming reports, trail maps and event details.
