Pagosa Paw: 101 happy dogs

Last weekend, the Pagosa Nordic Club, along with Colorado Mountain Mushers, sponsored the third annual Pagosa Paw Winter Dog Sports Event.

The event took place at the Kuhn Ranch, and 28 mushers with more than 100 dogs, as well as many volunteers and spectators, gathered for two days of races. Participants traveled from all over the state, as well as from Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, to participate in the last race of the series this season.

Races consisted of a six-dog/six-mile, four-mile/four-dog and one dog/one-mile sled event; a one- and three-mile skijor (dog pulls you on skis); a freight race (dog pulls weight); a three-mile cani-cross (dog pulls you on snowshoes); and a 50-yard dash.

Local musher Forest Bramwell was the winner of the four-dog sled division with a combined time of 29:49.

“It is great to bring sled dog racing back to Pagosa Springs and get people out there recreating with their dogs,” said race organizer Jennifer Martin. “We even had a five-year-old participate in the one-mile sled event, who only missed first place by four seconds. The event was fantastically attended by both mushers and visitors. I am very happy to see this event grow and everyone out there having a great time.”

Special thanks go to the Pagosa Nordic Club and the numerous volunteers who made the race possible, Liz Kuhn for the spectacular venue, Colorado Mountain Mushers and the many sponsors.

The Pagosa Nordic Club is a nonprofit whose mission is to enhance the winter recreational opportunities in Pagosa Springs by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, classic cross country skiing and snowshoeing for all ability levels and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events.
