Pagosa Nordic Club begins fourth season

By James Dickhoff

Special to The SUN

The Pagosa Nordic Club starts its fourth season of operations this winter.

Since 2009, the club has served as an advocate for groomed cross country ski trails for skate skiing and classic cross country skiing by providing trail grooming, race events, free activities and daily trail grooming reports.

The club provides daily trail grooming reports from a number of entities providing free, groomed winter trails. The Pagosa Ranger District grooms about 15km of trails at Coyote Hill and the Wolf Creek Ski Area grooms 10km of trails at Alberta Park, all groomed wide for skate skiing with set tracks for classic cross country skiing. The Wolf Creek Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club grooms about 100 miles of multiuse trails for snowmobiling and cross country skiing. The Pagosa Nordic Club grooms 5km at Fall Creek (early in the season only), 15km at West Fork, 10km on Reservoir Hill, 5km at the golf course and 1.5km at Yamaguchi Park for skate skiing and classic cross country skiing. Daily grooming reports are available at PagosaNordic.Com.

The Pagosa Nordic Club’s winter races have grown in popularity over the years. A new Pagosa Nordic season-opening race is added to this season’s schedule on Dec. 8-9 at Alberta Park at the Wolf Creek Ski Area featuring the Eagle Mountain Red Ryder BB Gun Biathlon.

Other annual races include WinterFest on Feb. 9-10, the Pagosa Paw Dog Sled and Canine joring races on Feb. 23-24, and the Pagosa Spring Quad on March 3, featuring a ski, run, ride and swim. This season’s Pagosa Nordic Club free cross country skiing activities include the popular Learn to Cross Country Ski clinics and the moonrise/sunset soup and chili ski socials. Details for all events will be available at PagosaNordic.com and in The SUN.

The Pagosa Nordic Club is a nonprofit, 100-percent volunteer organization with a mission, “To enhance winter recreational opportunities in Pagosa Springs by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, classic cross country skiing and snowshoeing for all ability levels and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events.”

PNC relies on generous donations, sponsors and memberships to cover expenses incurred in grooming and maintaining trails.

New this year, the Pagosa Nordic Club is conducting an early-season membership drive, which includes a chance to win a free season ski pass to Wolf Creek Ski area, a $599 value. PNC season memberships are being accepted at PagosaNordic.Com.
