Special to The PREVIEW
For fifth through eighth grade girls (2013-2014 school year), this week offers the unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the brand new Pagosa Springs Girls’ Choir.
Auditions for choristers will be held in the Pagosa Springs Middle School band room from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and 9 a.m. -noon on Saturday, May 4.
No individual audition times will be assigned. The choir, under the direction of Linda Parker, will begin in the fall 2013 school year, with weekly rehearsals on Monday afternoons from 4-5 p.m. at the middle school.
The choir is open to all girls in fifth through eighth grades, whether in public school, homeschooled or in online programs.
The audition is intended to be non-threatening and fun. Judges will be listening for the child’s ability to match pitch and echo clap simple rhythmic patterns. Girls planning to audition will be asked to sing “America” by memory, without accompaniment.
There is a $10 audition fee collected at the time of the audition that will be applied to the annual fee of $200 if the child is chosen for membership in the choir. The fee will be refunded to those who are not selected. An audition form can be obtained from Linda Parker (call 264-1434) or in the school office. The annual fee can be paid over the course of the school year. Some scholarships and fund-raising opportunities will be available to help defray the cost.
In the Pagosa Springs Girls’ Choir, singers will learn to perform high quality choral music in a variety of styles, including pop, folk and country, and some music will include choreography and props. The girls will also be provided opportunities to participate in trips to places including the Santa Fe Opera and Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque.
“Girls selected for the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir for the 2013-2014 season will be charter members, the very first group of singers in what we hope will be a choir with an enduring legacy,” said PSGC director Parker. “These girls will set the standards for those girls who will come after them in years to come. We want this to be a premier musical ensemble that will make our town proud, one that will nurture girls in the arts as they perform beautiful music, and offer a forum through which they can enjoy a special camaraderie with choristers who may well become lifelong friends. This choir will also strengthen the level of skills for singers who go on to enter the high school choir program.”
Volunteer and financial support is being sought to help launch this new choral group, along with performance opportunities for the fall and spring.
