‘On the Road to Healthy Forests’

By John Graves

On Sunday, Sept. 16, the Pagosah Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service topic will be “On the Road to Healthy Forests,” presented by J.R. Ford.

He points out that, “Though sometimes the road we head down looks to be straightforward, life experiences tell us that the road is most likely curvy with bumps.”

The ability to handle those bumps and curves led to new innovative ideas and is the attitude that helped J.R. to persevere to get where he is today.

This leads again to the title of Sunday’s’s presentation, “On the Road to Healthy Forests,” which gives us a look at the awarding of the Pagosa Long Term Stewardship Contract and the various start-up companies’ utilization of the products within the contract.

This talk strongly relates to the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Seventh Principle: “Respect for  the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part.”

Since 1983, J.R. Ford has been involved with the Pagosa Springs community as a building contractor, real estate broker, ranch manager and volunteer.  He enjoys all that Pagosa Springs and the region have to offer.  He finds it an especially great place to raise a family.  From his experiences managing local ranches, the concept to create a company that efficiently thins the overgrown forests arose.  He has taken that forest management idea and secured a 10-year stewardship contract, and is now in the process of building a five-megawatt biomass gasification power plant, as well as other start-up companies, including product removal and a sawmill.

The service begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Pagosah Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall.  The address is Unit B-15, Greenbriar Plaza.  Turn east on Greenbriar Drive off of North Pagosa Boulevard by the fire station, then left into the back parking lot and look for the big sign.  All are welcome.
