Dear Editor:

Does Pagosa Springs really need two community centers a mile away from each other, with each offering similar kinds of activities? Why? What we do need is a multi-purpose facility that could provide residents and visitors a venue for a variety of activities and functions that would add to our current community center. We need a venue suited to hold events like Music in the Mountains, teen dances, reunions, wedding receptions, small business conventions and private parties. Combine such a venue with a regulation-sized winter ice surface and summer roller floor. This would accommodate our Roller Girls in Pagosa and our local hockey players, adults and kids, who would love to have a place here at home to practice, play and compete. In other words, an indoor/outdoor sport and entertainment venue.

Such a venue is already in motion. The facility would be centrally located on the 160 with easy visibility and access for everyone who lives in, or visits, Pagosa. Plans are for it to be two-sided with a nylon tensile roof, sound system, catering kitchen and small meeting rooms in order to provide an aesthetically pleasing and multi-purpose architecture for both sporting and entertainment events.

If the community at large believes that a second community center is necessary, that’s fine, but it would still leave us in need of a multi-use facility that could offer a varied and broad array of activities and entertainment for everyone in Pagosa Springs.

Editor’s note: there is no plan to construct another community center in the area. There is a move underway to study the possibility of constructing a public recreation center in the town of Pagosa Springs. The Pagosa Lakes Recreation Center is not an open, public facility.
