Medical center

Dear Editor:

When my husband and I moved to Pagosa Springs more than 10 years ago, one of the factors in enabling us to do so, was because there was an expanding medical center here.

I know that many of our local residents and those in neighboring towns have not had the need to use any of the facilities at Pagosa Springs Medical Center, but It must be comforting to know that if medical necessity arises, that we have excellent physicians and resources that may one day save their lives.

I know what I’m talking about from experience.

I have on-going health issues in which I have visited physicians at the clinic dozens of times, utilized laboratory services, made visits to urgent care, ER, and out-patient facilities, been an in-patient several times, and received infusion services everyday for six weeks from the ER and PAC-U nurses and staff. I have estimated that I have used services at Pagosa Springs Medical Center well over 150 times in the past ten years.

What I would like folks to know is that from the front desk staffs in the medical center and clinic, to the physicians, nursing staff, medical staff, and even to the PSMC’s CEO, Brad Cochennet, I would get the treatment that some would expect, and others may be surprised about; I have always received care that is respectful, supportive, thoughtful, and professional.

On my most recent visit, for example, Jamie, one of the PAC-U nurses, heard that I was coming into the clinic, on the day I had just gotten back from surgery in Phoenix. Jamie called me at home because she and Dr. David Shaeffer, a PSMC staff surgeon, wanted to make sure that my most recent surgical sites were healing correctly and that an I.V. line had the proper dressing change. While I was waiting to see Jamie and Dr. Shaeffer, Brad Cochennet, walked by and stopped to see how I was doing (which he has done so often when I’m at the center). Please keep in mind that I am a regular person, I’m nobody famous, I’m not related to anyone at PSMC, and I don’t make large donations to the medical center, yet I am always treated like I’m someone special each and every time I visit any of the PSMC facilities.

We all know that there are so many wonderful benefits to living in Pagosa Springs. For me, because we have a place like Pagosa Springs Medical Center, folks like myself can enjoy the benefits of living here, too. Blessings to those of you who work, support or donate your time and money to our very excellent Pagosa Springs Medical Center. Thank you more than words can say.
