Last week, Ronnie Maez was the first to announce his candidacy for November’s election for Archuleta County Commissioner, District 1.

Maez, a Republican, has been a citizen of Archuleta County his entire life. He graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 1982, and has owned his own business in Pagosa Springs for 27 years. He has been married to his wife Dawn for 30 years and has raised two children in Archuleta County.

Maez brings experience on multiple local boards with him into the commissioner race.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Maez volunteered with the Archuleta County Fair Board. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for a total of 10 years.

“I rose through the ranks to be promoted to captain, while simultaneously receiving several awards.  I received the Rookie of the Year award in 1996, the Firefighter of the Year award in 1998 and the Officer of the Year award in 2001,” Maez wrote in a statement to The SUN.

The candidate also served as the chairman of the Board of Directors for the Pagosa Fire Protection District. He served on the district’s Unified Combined Dispatch Board and on the district’s Board of Firefighter Pension Funds.

In addition, Maez served on the Archuleta School District Accountability Committee for one year.

This year marks his fourth year as a board member of Pagosa Springs’ Planning Commission. He has served as both chairman and vice chairman of the commission.
