Dear Editor:

Our community is so lucky to have a man like Dr. Dwight Hooton decide to run for the school board. Not only is he an educated individual, he has lived in our community, has a business (he is a veterinarian) in our community and his children were educated here.

Even though I know him and like him a lot, I asked him for his positions on a number of education issues so I could evaluate his candidacy. I was impressed that he had strong convictions on improving education in Archuleta County. He was complimentary of the existing school board and listed several areas in which they had made improvements. One I was particularly happy about was the increase in the percentage of students taking college preparatory classes — it doubled to 40 percent in the last two years. This was to address the problem of graduates of Archuleta County schools had to take remedial classes on entering college. He wants to continue the good work that the existing board has done.

He believes that investment in education is the most important of any we make in our community! The better our children’s education, the more successful they will be, and a quality school system is necessary for that to happen. Dr. Hooton is willing to put in the time and effort on the school board to further improve our schools and our children’s future.

Dr. Hooton is a very hard working man, in addition to putting in full days at his business, he frequently makes trips to homes at night and on weekends to tend to horses that have emergency issues. He finally has some help at his office so he feels it is time for him to give back to the community that has been so good to him over the years.

Please join me in supporting Dr. Dwight Hooton for the school board. Trust me; you will be glad you did,

Frank Meiners
