‘Love Letters’ — a special performance for Labor Day weekend in Durango

New Face Productions is pleased to present a special production of A.R. Gurney’s play, “Love Letters,” to be performed at the Durango Arts Center (DAC) Sept. 2 and 3.

Returning to Durango following their 2016 appearance in “The Guys,” acclaimed actors Wendie Malick and Dan Lauria will portray the fictional childhood friends Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III.

Using the epistolary form sometimes found in novels, the actors sit side-by-side and read the notes, letters and cards sent to one another over the course of almost 50 years. During the evening, the characters share their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats that have occurred throughout their separated lives.

For Malick and Lauria, the play resonates more than most because they themselves have been close friends for more than 20 years. Often performing opposite each other, Malick refers to him as, “Part of my extended family; Dan and I are like a pair of old jeans.”

Lauria remarked that actors reading letters is far from boring and notes that, “The play will surprise and maybe even shock people by how affective it is. They will see themselves in key phrases that are universal. In previous performances there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

The Sept. 2 performance will be at 7 p.m. and the Sept. 3 performance will be at 2 p.m. at the Durango Arts Center Theater. General admission tickets are $35; VIP tickets are available that include reserved tables and a post-play reception with the actors.

Purchase tickets at durangoarets.tix.com or at the DAC box office. Additional information can be found at durangoarts.org.
