Local man dies in ski accident

Staff Writer

A local skier died at Wolf Creek Ski Area the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 9.

John E. (Jack) Hummel, 70, a season pass holder at Wolf Creek Ski Area, died of extensive injuries to his chest, lungs and rib cage following an apparent accident, according to Mineral County Coroner Charles Downing.

According to ski area owner Davey Pitcher and Downing, Hummel was skiing with his wife, Josie, Wednesday afternoon when he reportedly veered off course and had an accident on the lower portion of the Bunny Hop run.

Downing said Hummel’s wife was skiing 30 to 40 seconds behind him on the run when Hummel went over a hill and out of sight. When Hummel’s wife topped the hill, she saw him near the tree.

Downing said Hummel’s injuries are consistent with him hitting the tree.

“We’re not really sure what happened,” Pitcher said, with Downing echoing the same sentiment.

“We just don’t know what happened,” Downing said.

A physician’s advisor on the scene was unable to resuscitate Hummel, Pitcher said.

Downing said resuscitation efforts were started shortly after the accident, which occured at about 1:45 p.m., and continued until Downing pronounced Hummel dead at 4:12 p.m.
