Dear Editor:

As I write this, more than 86,000 Americans have died of COVID-19, in the space of only about two and a half months. If on January 1 of this year someone had said that more than 86,000 Americans would die in a disaster before Memorial Day, who would have believed it? But that is the sad truth. And every one of those 86,000 Americans is somebody’s father, mother, sister, life partner, son, daughter, or best friend. Americans in every state and of every race, ethnicity, and religious belief have died, although as with all disasters the toll has been the greatest on those who are the least advantaged. We need only look a couple counties away to the Navajo Reservation’s horrible death toll to see the latter truth.
