Land of the free

Dear Editor:

Thirteen of America’s first 18 presidents owned slaves. Zachary Taylor was our last president to actually enslave people while serving in office. Ulysses S. Grant, the last president to own a slave, freed him in 1859, a year before the start of the Civil War. George Washington, that friendly-looking guy on the one dollar bill, owned 318 slaves; human beings who could be whipped, branded, maimed, lynched, inseminated, or treated in any other way their owners chose to treat them, absolutely without recourse or record.
