Ideas sought for youth programs

SUN Columnist

The Town of Pagosa Springs is in the process of evaluating the feasibility of new summer programming, clinics and workshops for local youths.

Through an ongoing partnership between the town recreation department and the Ross Aragon Community Center, staff hopes to identify new possibilities for low-cost sports programming, outdoor education and arts-related endeavors. The desire is to create an introductory curriculum for next summer and implement as many new programs as the town budget allows.

The tentative plan is to utilize volunteers for as many programs as possible, but there may also be opportunities for the use of talented, specialized instructors on a part-time, compensated basis. The goal is to provide fun, educational programs for youth ages 4-10 at a reasonable cost.

Anyone interested in submitting a programming idea can contact the town recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 232, or Cheryl Bowdridge, community center director, at 264-4152.

7-8 basketball

Schedules for this year’s program are available in the recreation office in Town Hall and have also been posted on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

Snacks and beverages will be available from the concessions area throughout the season. All games will be played in the Ross Aragon Community Center gymnasium.

For more information, call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

9-12 basketball

Registration for this year’s 9- and 10-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old youth basketball leagues will run through Dec. 21.

Children who will be 9, 10, 11 or 12 years old as of Jan. 1, 2013 are eligible to register. The seasons will not begin until early January.

Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and are also available online in Adobe format at www.townofpagosasprings.com (click on the town departments link, then the recreation link). Registrations have also been supplied to local schools; parents are reminded to return completed registrations to the recreation office.

Cost is $30 per player and $15 for each additional child in the same family who participates. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Town of Pagosa Springs.

Coaches and team sponsors for these divisions are needed and appreciated. Cost for sponsorship is $150, which includes sponsor’s name on team uniforms, commemorative plaque with team picture and recognition in media articles.

For more information, call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

Coaches and parents who ordered youth soccer and volleyball photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pick up of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.
