Hope in the midst of messiness

By Dale Marks
Special to The PREVIEW

Many of us have watched that classic Christmas movie “A Christmas Story,” (yes, the one of “You’ll shoot your eye out” fame).

On that special day, the family in the movie waits in anticipation for a fabulous Christmas meal of roast turkey with all the trimmings. Unfortunately, the neighbor’s dogs break into the kitchen, devouring the turkey and seemingly eliminating any hope of a calm and peaceful dinner.

Life does that, doesn’t it?

Instead of the peace and serenity of a Norman Rockwell Christmas dinner, for many of us, this season is filled with stress, busyness and frustration. It can be a real mess.

But right in the midst of all the messiness, hope was born.

Luke’s Gospel tells us: “And while they were there, the time came for the baby to be born. And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. And she wrapped in cloths and laid him in a manger, because“there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:6-7)

Tommy Woodard put it this way: “God had this messy plan … a plan to save the world, and to do that he was going to send his son. Where does the God of the universe send his son? Where does the King of Kings and Lord of Lords come? To a barn…a stable…a manger of all places! Certainly no place fit for a king. But then again, this wasn’t any ordinary king.”

Hope in the midst of messiness! This Christmas, may the mess-age of Christ-mess break through the messiness of your life and bring you joy and hope.
