Historian to talk about railroads in Southwest Colorado

By Joe Lewandowski
Special to The SUN

Railroad buffs who want to learn more about the old lines in Southwest Colorado should plan on attending a history talk at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Navajo State Park Visitors’ Center.

Local historian John Porco will talk about the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the line that ran through what is now Navajo Reservoir and Arboles, Tiffany and Allison. The highlight of the evening will be rare and unusual photos, both of the railroad in its heyday and of its current historic remnants. Vestiges of this empire are scattered throughout Navajo State Park.

The program is free, but every vehicle entering the park must have a pass. The daily entry fee is $7 and an annual pass costs $70.
