High school fall sports requirements announced

As Pagosa Springs High School staff prepares for the upcoming school year, athletic director Marcie Ham has passed along some important dates and information for those students interested in sports.

On Monday, Aug. 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., staff from the Pagosa Springs Medical Center will offer sports physicals in the main office of PSHS for $25 (only cash or a check will be accepted; no credit cards and no insurance).

The first day for golf practice will also be on Monday, Aug. 4, at 5:30 p.m. on the practice green at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club.

The first day of practice for all other fall sports will be on Monday, Aug. 11. Football practice will be from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the football practice field (a.k.a. the baseball field). Boys’ soccer practice will be from 8 to 10 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the soccer practice field (behind Golden Peaks Stadium). Girls’ volleyball practice will be from 7 to 11:30 a.m. in the PSHS Gym. The practice time and location for the coed cross-country team will be announced later. Cheerleading practice will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. in the PSHS commons.

Before the first practice, all student-athletes must have two things. The first is a physical, which must be completed by a physician.  There will be a form available at the high school on Monday, Aug. 4, or it can be downloaded online at the high school’s website (pagosaspringshigh.co.adh.schoolinsites.com).

The second requirement is to pick up the PSHS Parent and Student-Athlete Handbook and fill out all of the accompanying forms. This packet will also be available at the high school and on the PSHS website on Aug. 4. This is being revised so the packet from last year should not be used.

The PSHS office will be open at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, for parents to turn in paperwork.

Then, on Thursday, Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. there will be a mandatory meeting for student-athletes and their parents in the PSHS library. While the meeting is required for students participating in a fall sport, those playing winter and spring sports are encouraged to attend this meeting as well, even though there will be other meetings at the start of each season.

Also on Aug. 14, the golf team will start play at 9 a.m. at the Rio Grande Club in South Fork.

The varsity coed cross-country team will travel to Colorado Springs on Aug. 22 for the Pre-State Invite.

The girls’ varsity volleyball team will host a preseason scrimmage on Aug. 23.

The boys’ varsity soccer team will be in Alamosa on Aug. 26 to take on the Mean Moose.

The varsity football team will host the Centauri Falcons on Aug. 29, while the JV football team will be in Centauri on Aug. 30.

Finally, the JV and freshman volleyball teams will start their season in Cortez on Sept. 11.

School staff has created a Twitter account (@PagosaAthletics) to help communicate game times and locations, scores, highlights and other information to the community.  This is the fastest way to get the word out when there are changes in times or locations due to weather. Everyone is encouraged to follow the Twitter feed.

The Intermountain League has switched to Schedule Star for all of its athletic scheduling. Go to www.schedulestar.com and enter Pagosa Springs High School in the upper right corner.  Here the public can view the schedules, sign up for alerts and check scores.
