The Pagosa Springs High School cross country team started its season in a hot way last week —running in the 90 degree heat at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede in Colorado Springs.

And, despite the hot, dry weather, one Pirate runner brought home a top-10 finish on the course that will play host to the state championship meet in October.

Emily Bryant led the Pirates with a fourth-place finish on the day, finishing in 21 minutes, 35 seconds in the girls’ 3A race.

Following behind Bryant, Taylor Hammer-Lee finished 46th at 24:45, Olivia Reinhardt finished 65th in 28:46, and Delany Khung finished 98th at 28:29.

Rounding out the Lady Pirates at the meet, Megan Ellis finished 110th with a time of 30:48 and Andie Miller crossed the finish line 116th with a time of 33:10.

Leading the way for the boys was Tyler Greenly, who finished in 20:10 to take the 43rd spot.

Chris Archuleta finished 93rd on the day with a time of 21:49, while Michael Iverson finished 102nd with a time of 22:41.

Mason Chronowski followed with a 104th-place finish and a time of 22:52, with Ben Miller finishing 122nd in 25.24.

Coach Scott Anderson was not available for comment by press time Wednesday.

This Saturday, the teams will stick a little closer to home, heading to Alamosa for a 9 a.m. meet.
