School begins next week, but athletes from Pagosa Springs High School, including the cross country runners, are hard at work.

Practice for the teams has been underway for weeks, and now competition begins.

Today, the Pirate harriers are kicking off their regular season with a meet at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs — also the site of the state meet scheduled for the end of October.

For the boys, runners returning from last year’s state team include seniors Tyler Greenly, Mason Chronowski and Zack Ellis, and sophomore Nick Hutcherson.

Coach Scott Anderson predicted during the preseason that Greenly, Hutcherson and Chronowski are the likely leaders of the team on the course, with the rest of the Pagosa runners, led by Ellis, pushing each other toward the top of the pack.

On the girls’ side, Anderson expected senior Emily Bryant and sophomores Olivia Reinhardt and Taylor Hammer-Lee to lead the way.

Today’s meet is the first of seven in the regular season for the 20 members of the cross country team.

The team brings the action home on Sept. 21 with the annual Wolf Creek Classic.
