Special to The PREVIEW
In three weeks, the American Legion Color Guard will be leading the best Fourth of July Parade ever down Pagosa Street. There will be decorated floats, Red Ryder royalty, bands, beautiful horses, bicycles and various other entries, all patriotically decorated. As in years past, there are about 80 entries expected to be judged for the best of the best of this year’s theme, “Service Above Self.”
Cash awards will be given to the first three winners in each category. The categories are commercial, youth groups, non-profit and service groups and family/individuals. Winners will be notified by July 7 and checks will be mailed within two weeks.
The parade will be held Friday, July 4, at 10 a.m. Applications, maps and general information are now available at the Chamber of Commerce or may be downloaded directly from The Pagosa Springs SUN website, www.pagosasun.com.
As in years past, no items or candy are to be thrown from the entries. Those walking alongside the entry may hand items out only after the entry has passed the bell tower. If candy is important to you, get your viewing spot past the bell tower. The Town of Pagosa Springs Police Department and the Pagosa Springs Rotary enforce this for safety reasons, as they want to ensure a good time for all.
So, Pagosa, put on your thinking caps and get your applications turned into the Chamber of Commerce no later than June 30. After that date, participants may still enter at the registration booth on the day of the parade, but will be placed at the end of the parade. Be a part of one of Pagosa’s most celebrated and enjoyed events of the year. For more information, call 946-9700.
