Special to The SUN
GECKO (Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors) welcomes XTERRA athletes to Pagosa Springs this weekend. In only its second year, this off-road triathlon is gritty, dirty fun.
Set on some of the gnarliest trails Pagosa Springs has to offer, the course traverses over rocks and roots in Martinez Canyon. The swim start is in Lake Pagosa, a unique opportunity to access the lakes and perfect for this time of year — beat the summer heat.
For those interested in joining in, there’s still time to enter. Online registration closes today, but there is still a Friday evening pick up and late registration from The Hub Bike Shop from 4-8 p.m. There will also be registration at the start/finish area from 8 a.m. on Saturday. Registration is open to relay teams of up to three or solos. The distances are a 1-mile swim, 16-mile mountain bike and 6.2-mile trail run.
There will be plenty of spectator fun on the day, too, from 9 a.m. at the boat ramp on Cloud Cap Avenue, watch the athletes complete their swim, bike and run to the finish line.
