GECKO has plenty of winter fun in store

Although the winter months signal the end of summer trail runs and triathlons for GECKO, there’s still a hive of activity for you to join.

GECKO joins the Durango Performance Center 4Corners Cyclocross Race Series, adding two new cyclocross events based in Pagosa Springs. These will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29 (Turkey Cross), and Saturday, Dec. 20 (Chris Cross), at 11 a.m.

GECKO has a Christmas tree entered in the Ross Aragon Community Center’s Festival of Trees on Dec. 5, and Lvonne Wilson will be using her extensive talents and gifts to decorate our tree with an outdoors theme.

The following day, GECKO’s Sweaty Santa 3k and 5k fun walk, shuffle, run will take place. This is an event suitable and festive enough that the whole family will enjoy being outdoors in the fresh mountain air. Finish with hot chocolate and marshmallows amongst the Christmas trees at the Ross Aragon Community Center.

This event will also be the end of Kids Run America’s Pagosa Kids Run a Marathon Project as well as the Girls on the Run local finishing event.

Christmas stocking ornaments made with care by Tessie Garcia and the Hands-On Art Class will be awarded to each finisher, to be hung on your tree with pride.

Also, this month GECKO has its final scholarship recipient, Jessey Hampton, sailing in Baja, Mexico, on her 30-day trip with NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), completing five successful tours this year. Ongoing fundraising efforts for these scholarships and other GECKO programs continue throughout the winter months, as does the start of the 2015 application process for scholarships, with a form to download off the GECKO website,
