The Inaugural Pagosa Pond Hockey Classic was a great success. The tournament was held on the Riverside Park pond this past weekend.
Five coed teams from Pagosa and Durango competed in three-on-three play over the course of the weekend.
Team Sparkys took the overall top spot with their win over the Unicorns. The all-girl team Nutcrackers won the team spirit award, while honorable mentions go out to Can’t Skate Backwards and Mullet Hockey Inc.
While the competitive spirit was alive and well with hard-fought play by all, the purpose of the tournament was to raise awareness for the need of a permanent ice skating facility in Pagosa Springs.
All proceeds from this weekends event will be donated to the Friends of Pagosa Multi Purpose Pavilion. This is the nonprofit that is pursuing a permanent ice facility in Pagosa.
Don’t worry if you missed it, next year’s event is already being planned for the first weekend in January, with hopes of drawing teams from all around southwest Colorado and New Mexico.
