Special to The SUN
After months of behind-the-scenes preparation, a coalition, Friends of Pagosa Skate Pavilion, is looking forward to presenting plans for a multi-purpose skating pavilion in Pagosa Springs to the public.
The facility will operate under 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of Southwest Colorado.
Current plans are to locate the pavilion nestled in the pine trees on Lot F in Harman Park, on U.S. 160 across the street from the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.
Plans include a regulation hockey-size rink, 85 x 200, refrigerated and covered for winter ice activities, with the facility turned into a venue for non ice-related activities during summer months.
Planned winter activities will include hockey, figure skating, speed skating, broom ball, adult groups and lessons, mommy or daddy and me classes, and public skating. Also, group or private lessons for hockey and figure skating.
Planned summer activities will include roller skating, roller hockey, broom ball, pickleball and group lessons, and the facility will be available for use at any number of private events. The facility will be home to the Roller Girls in Pagosa (R.I.P.) for use as a training facility, and hopefully as a venue for future league bouts.
This facility will be for all Pagosans, ages 3 to 103, with a range of activities to appeal to all.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, we will have an open house in the side room at Boss Hogg’s Restaurant, 5:30-8:30 p.m., to show pictures of the proposed facility, as well as of plans and the site. You will be able to meet members of the board of directors, and it will be a time to get your questions answered. Our first official fund-raiser is being planned for some time in November. Fully tax-deductible donations are gratefully accepted.
Profits from this facility will be donated to a sports scholarship fund for Pagosa Springs youth.
