Free speech

Dear Editor:

Signs supporting the proposed Pagosa Springs recreation center around town went missing during the week of April 17-21. Many “anti” messages have been posted where the “pro” signs were located. What’s going on?

I am a 65 year native of Chicago living here in Pagosa. Truthfully, I have been curious about frequent references to “crooked Chicago politics” in your newspaper. How do people living here have even the slightest idea of grass roots Chicago politics? It seems to me that longingly staring at the mountains all day creates overactive imaginations. The problem of changing political signs around Chicago in the last ten years has been solved by the local press which keeps a close watch for this kind of low level, rather laughable shenanigans. It seems to me that, perhaps, a few of those “crooked” political workers have moved here. Leave the sign where they are. It’s called freedom of speech.

I missed this letter for some reason. While I sympathize with the author to a certain extent, he should be aware that quite a few NO signs have gone MIA, especially over the recent weekend. Quite a few YES signs were improperly placed initially (illegally IOW), and were removed by authorities. Possibly as a tactic to enable people to complain about signs being removed, a “Chicago” tactic. But this is all pretty silly at this point. If you don’t know how you’re going to vote by now I really hope you don’t count signs as a way to decide.

The reason I am writing is the author raises the issue of free speech. I hope he and others can appreciate the irony of a YES person bringing this up, when in fact 90% of the population of Archuleta County being taxed under this proposal are not allowed to vote on it.

Furthermore, and this truly amazing to me, one of the main proponents of the rec center has been threatening local news outlets with lawsuits to prevent them from getting too curious about the financing and cost/revenue projections presented by rec center supporters. This is on record, he has threatened both the Sun and the Daily Post. He apparently does not like being asked hard questions about it, or when something printed questions the accuracy of prior numbers. I am not sure how this guy still has a job working for the Town in any capacity. He shouldn’t.

So yeah, about the free speech thing. People in glass houses…
