Two former Pagosa Springs High School basketball players and one former Durango High School basketball player will be coaching a Pirate Basketball Camp Monday, July 28, through Wednesday, July 30.
Former Pirate standouts Mary Brinton (now playing for Fort Lewis College) and Kain Lucero (now playing for Otero Junior College), along with former Durango Demon Emily McCue (also now at FLC) are set to coach the camp, which will be put on by the PSHS basketball coaches.
The camp, for boys and girls entering grades two through 12, will focus on instruction in fundamental drills that athletes can take home and practice individually or with a group, as well as contests throughout the camp week.
“(W)e thought it would be good to give a different view on drills and things since we have played college basketball. And we just want the kids to get better to benefit the area,” Lucero wrote in an email to SUN staff of his motivation to coach at the camp.
Registration for the camp, which will be held at the high school, will take place on July 28. For grades seven through 12, registration will be at 7:30 a.m. For campers in grades two through six, registration will be at 11:30 a.m.
Camp for athletes in grades seven through 12 will run from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with campers entering grades two through six attending from noon to 3:30 p.m.
Registration for the camp is $40, with that money benefiting the PSHS girls basketball program.
In addition to three days of instruction, each camper will receive a T-shirt.
Registration forms can be downloaded at https://www.facebook.com/groups/piratebasketballcamp/. Checks should be made payable to Pagosa Springs Girls Basketball. Registration forms can be mailed to P.O. Box 5213, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147, or taken on the first day of camp.
