Dear Editor:

The board of directors of FACE (Foundation for Archuleta County Education) took a giant leap of faith on Thursday, Aug. 22, when they held their first fund-raiser for the foundation, FACE-OFF of the BANDS. We asked four terrific bands — Brooks Lindner, Lead Foot Ruthie, PBR, and Blue Grass Cadillac — to play for free, not knowing if anyone would show up to hear them play.

We were not disappointed. Over 100 great families and friends showed up to support our first efforts and helped us raise over $1,100 for the enrichment of education for children (K-12) in our community.

FACE will be doing a needs assessment this fall, and will continue to fund-raise in the community. We are looking for community volunteers who would like to get involved with FACE, and welcome the opportunity to discuss FACE with community groups and leaders. Our current board members are Jason Peterson, Jessie Formwalt, Marcie Lewis and Bob Lynch.

As the other nonprofits in town know, it is not easy raising money, even in this community, which is so supportive. Being the new nonprofit means we have to work harder to get our mission told. However, the board feels very strongly that with a strong educational foundation in place, not only will our kids benefit, but it will help build a stronger economy by demonstrating to those considering moving here or starting a business that this community values the education of our students.
