| The lovely San Juan River flows through the heart of downtown Pagosa Springs, offering superb views of the town and, farther downstream, spectacular shale cliffs. Although not the roughest of rides, a raft or kayak trip down the San Juan is perfect for the beginner or those who enjoy a gentle float. Raft trips on the river begin as early as March, when wet suits are required. The season peaks in May and June, before tapering off with slower stream flows in July.
The Piedra River, 23 miles west of Pagosa, answers a call for the more adventurous soul. Its season is short — lasting just 6-8 weeks — but waters boil over class III and IV rapids through a pair of breathtaking box canyons.
The upper Animas River is another nearby beauty, enjoying a reputation as one of the top five stretches of river rafting thrills in North America. These waters rank high for both scenery and intensely long stretches of rapids.
A little south of Pagosa Springs, in New Mexico, runs the Chama River, a scenic stretch of water passing by multi-colored sandstone cliffs.
Several Pagosa Springs companies offer rental equipment, or provide guided rafting trips. Anyone striking out on their own is urged to secure permission before stopping or camping on private land, which borders both sides of most rivers in the area. Guided adventures can last from three hours to three days, and visitors are encouraged to call a week in advance to secure the date of their choice. Multi-day trips may require longer notice.
