Pagosa Country provides an incredible diversity of terrain and trails for runners at all ability levels.
And there are events — some combining running and biking — scheduled this summer season to accommodate all competitive and recreational runners.
July 11
Pagosa Duathlon ‘Do-the-Du’
The third annual Pagosa Duathlon “Do-the-Du” kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 11. First-timers, casual competitors and die-hards alike are guaranteed to love this event. If you enjoy running, adore biking, or both, come experience the pristine San Juan Mountains and gorgeous terrain of Brockover Mesa as you race your way to the finish line.
Competitors will begin with a 6-mile run, followed by a 12-mile mountain bike ride. New this year: the “1/2-du” — a shorter Duathlon course for those not quite sure if the long route is quite their style. You can “du” either race as a team, or take it on solo.
Race routes integrate beginner and intermediate levels of single-track trails, dirt and gravel roads. The venue of the San Juan National Forest could not be more perfect for athletes as they trek through aspen groves, grassy fields, and the dreaded rocky Piedra Stock driveway. The course is fast, testing each competitor’s endurance, speed and ability.
The Pagosa Duathlon “Do-the-Du” welcomes individual athletes, as well as teams of two for each leg of the race. Younger competitors under the age of 18 are encouraged to participate with the written consent of a parent/guardian.
At the finish line, get re-fueled with food and fun while you win the many, many prizes we have to give away. Each competitor will also receive an official race T-shirt. Awards and prizes will be presented following the race. Spectators are always welcome!
Registration details can be found at the Pagosa Lakes Recreation Center, as well as online at www.ACVAP.org. If your business would like to be a race sponsor, call (970) 264-9075 for details. Gold level sponsors receive free registrations.
The Pagosa Duathlon “Do-the-Du” is gearing up to be one of the premier sporting events of the summer with over 75 athletes expected to compete. Visit www.ACVAP.org for race details, map, photos and more or call (970) 264-9075 for more information.
Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors
GECKO Mountain Trail Race Series
The summer of 2009 brings the inaugural GECKO Mountain Trail Race Series to the Pagosa area, featuring three races that give both novice and seasoned runners a chance to keep their toned summer bods in top form while supporting a cause that helps kids stay fit and in touch with the great outdoors.
The races offer regional runners a chance to challenge themselves on diverse courses throughout Pagosa Country while raising money for a worthwhile cause. Proceeds from the series support GECKO (Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing scholarships for programs such as WildPagosa and HMI (High Mountain Institute) that give children an opportunity to disconnect from television and computers — and connect with the outdoors.
Turkey Track Trail Marathon and 1/2 Marathon, June 6
The series launches on Saturday, June 6, with the TTT — the Turkey Track Trail Marathon and 1/2 Marathon, in and around the Turkey Springs and Brockover area. With a pristine single track, gentle climbs, and a sylvan setting, the TTT offers runners the opportunity to prime their thighs and lungs for the challenges set for later in the summer.
Devil Mountain 50k and 1/2 Marathon, July 18
Next in the series, the Devil Mountain 50k and 1/2 marathon on Saturday, July 18, gives regional harriers a chance to “beat the heat” on the alpine trails of Devil and Horse mountains. Featuring trails through some of the most ancient old-growth forests in the state, the Devil Mountain 50k and 1/2 marathon promises breathtaking vistas on an exciting course.
Mountain Chile Cha Cha Marathon, Sept. 26.
Wrapping up the series, the Mountain Chile Cha Cha marathon kicks off the notorious Pagosa Springs chili and music festival on Sept. 26. Returning a year after its wildly successful debut, the sophomore race features a challenging “in town” course that will leave runners breathless, both from the climb and the views. Afterwards, runners can refresh themselves with a cold beer, a bowl of hot chili and thumping music at the 4th annual Mountain Chile Cha Cha festival.
With a point system tracking the performance of racers and cash awards for series winners, the GECKO Mountain Trail Race Series will keep runners coming back for bragging rights, a shot at cash prizes, and a chance to support a worthy cause.
