Located two miles west of downtown on U.S. 160, was the home of Fred Harman, artist and cartoonist. Mr. Harman’s fame spread around the world as a result of the Red Ryder and Little Beaver comic strip that he created. From 1938 until 1964, the strip was read by 45 million devoted followers in over 750 newspapers on three continents. Harman grew up on his father’s homestead and used his early experiences as a cowboy in his art that gave him the recognition in The Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Cowboy Artists of America Association. In 1958, he was presented with Sertoma’s “American Way of Life” award as Colorado’s outstanding citizen. The Museum features a wide-ranging display of the artist’s paintings, drawings and a collection of memorabilia from his long and eventful life.
