Big Brothers Big Sisters’ annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake fund-raiser will take place all day Saturday, May 2.
Bowl For Kids’ Sake is a fund-raising thank-you party. After a month of raising awareness and funds, Big Brothers Big Sisters thanks everyone involved in Bowl for Kids’ Sake with a fun afternoon of bowling, food and friends at a special bowling alley created for just one day at the PowerHouse Youth Center in downtown Pagosa Springs.
The BBBS program serves children who could benefit from a positive one-on-one relationship with an adult mentor by matching kids (“littles”) with volunteer mentors (“bigs.”) The local agency has served the community since 2000 and has matched more than 100 kids between 6 and 17 years of age.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for bowling teams and sponsors for the event. Bowl with your friends, family or coworkers. Raising funds for Bowl for Kids’ Sake is fun and it’s not hard to participate. Each bowler is asked to raise $80, and that is as easy as asking eight friends and family members for $10 each. Four people form a team with a $320 goal per team. Each person meeting their $80 goal gets a T-shirt.
Fund-raising is now even easier with online registration and donations that allow participants to direct friends and family to a personal donation page where donors are able to contribute online and bowlers are able to keep track of fund-raising efforts. Teams can use their creative genius to develop other methods of raising funds — groups can hold bake sales, ask for donations at work, or send e-mail campaigns out to friends and family.
Good bowlers, bad bowlers, first-time bowlers, wanna-be bowlers — all can “spare” some time to give back to a great cause. Bowling scores are all in the name of fun as the community comes together to give children in need a boost. The real “strikes” are the kids who benefit from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and the Bowl for Kids’ Sake participants who keep the ball rolling smoothly.
The Springs Resort and Spa is the title sponsor of this year’s Bowl for Kids’ Sake, but additional sponsors and volunteers are needed. To find out how you can donate as a major sponsor, lane sponsor or bowling sponsor for this event, call the BBBS office at 264-5077.
Jack Ellis is lining up a variety of live entertainment for the event. If you would like to help with entertainment, call Terri House at 264-2100.
In the past two years the Big Brothers Big Sisters program has grown by 57 percent in Archuleta County and matched more kids with caring adults mentors than ever before. Our goal is to match children in our community who could use a friend — a little extra support — with adult volunteers. We want to be able to help as many children in the community as possible. We want to change how children grow up in Pagosa and the support of our community for Bowl for Kids’ Sake is essential for that to happen.
Statistics show Big Brothers Big Sisters makes a difference in the lives of the children who participate in the program. They are 46 percent less likely to use drugs, 27 percent less likely to start drinking and 52 percent less likely to skip school. They are also 33 percent less likely to engage in violence and the program has been named among the top violence prevention programs in the United States.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the nonprofit’s only fund-raising event of the year. All of the money raised at the event will be used to support operations within Archuleta County.
