Auction for the Animals
Is the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs really going to auction off dogs and cats?
No, the Auction for the Animals is an event of interest to humans.

What is the Auction for the Animals?

It is the largest fund-raising event of the year for the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs, a non-profit organization.

Fees the Humane Society receives through adoptions and impound redemptions support the mission but do not completely cover the costs of feeding, housing, spaying and neutering, medical expenses and care the animals in the care of the Society receive.

Revenue from the Humane Society Thrift Store, the Auction for the Animals and other fund-raising events during the year significantly augment the revenues that help cover the costs at the animal shelter.

This year will mark the 15th anniversary of this unique and exciting event. Every year more than 375 guests are in attendance at this dressy, fund-raising affair. Ladies, here’s your chance to put on a favorite dress and get your guy out of his work clothes.

The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs is proud to be one of the few animal shelters in the nation to boast of the success of its “pet overpopulation programs.” Spay/neuter programs created in 1995 have shown positive results, impacting the number of unwanted animals born in our community. Our humane society has seen a decrease every year since 2001 of animals entering our shelter.

The Auction for the Animals will be held Friday, Aug. 28, at the Pagosa Springs Community Center, with the doors opening at 6 p.m. followed by silent and live auction. The live auction is the highlight of the evening, featuring exciting bidding wars.

There is a limited number of tickets sold for this extravaganza, so be sure to purchase your ticket in advance. Advanced ticket price is $25, and $30 at the door. Purchase of a ticket includes commemorative glass, complimentary wine, beer, soft drinks, and an array of delectable foods from local restaurants and caterers.

More than 12,000 letters requesting donations are mailed out of the area in March each year. The auction receives tremendous support from the entertainment industry. Donations, ranging from first edition signed books and signed baseballs to cash donations are received from animal supporters across the United States. The support from the local community is very generous: the society receives donations such as gorgeous, handcrafted jewelry, more than 100 gift certificates from our local veterinarians, hotels, jewelers, hair salons, and various restaurants, including several gourmet baskets of goodies and a romance package from a local bed and breakfast.

Visitors are welcome to join the community in supporting the homeless dogs and cats of Pagosa Country.

Be sure to mark your calendar and attend the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs’ 15th annual Auction for the Animals. All are invited. Advance tickets are available at Plaid Pony, Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce, Moonlight Books, Pagosa Springs Community Center and our Humane Society Thrift Store.

Come out for a fun evening and place your bids on myriad items, large and small.
