Election costs

Dear Editor:

Why do American politicians ask for and spend millions of dollars on the election, or re-election of candidates in our system?

Is it because it takes more dirt collected against an opponent to win? Or more dollars to educate or sway the opposition?

What if 50 percent of all the money raised in a state for the national candidates was spent in that state for the homeless veterans and children in need?
