Archuleta County Education Center’s first FY13 GED tests were administered on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Four students took a total of seven tests, and GED testing will be scheduled monthly for students who are ready.

The third opportunity to take the Jewelry Making class at the Ed Center will be Saturday, Feb. 9, 10 a.m.-noon, and there are still places available.

Intro to Word is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11, 6-9 p.m., and is taught by Pat Attanasio. This class will cover the basics of Word: how to use menus and tool bars, work with files, create documents, manipulate, edit and format text and print files. Some basic computer knowledge is needed; students can bring their own laptops or use our PCs.

Intermediate Excel will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 6-9 p.m., and Advanced Excel will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The popular Social Networking class will be repeated in March.

A Publisher class will also be held in March, and two levels of QuickBooks classes will be held in May.

The February First Aid/CPR class will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. CPR will be in the morning and, after a short lunch break, First Aid will be covered in the afternoon. February’s class will be taught by Pete Peterson. First Aid/CPR class is held monthly, with a variety of times to suit everyone’s schedule.

For summer outfitters, two recertification classes will be held in May, so start looking for that almost-expired certificate, which is required.

Other ACEC programs include GED tutoring and preparation. This one-on-one tutoring class also covers Adult Basic Education for people who need to brush up on reading and writing skills, and Adult Secondary Education. ESL (English as a Second Language) for adults in our community who need to learn English, when it is not their native language.

ACEC also hosts the Alternative High School Diploma Program (AHSDP), which is administered by Southwest Colorado Community College.

Our after-school tutoring sessions have been well-attended, and students are experiencing the benefit of help with homework and individually targeted support with school work. Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday at the elementary school and the middle school. Although a one-time annual registration fee of $15 is required, the tutoring is free.

Our after-school enrichment classes are very popular at the elementary school; Miss Tessie’s art and cooking programs are held Monday through Thursday, and registration is monthly.

Friday enrichment programs at the middle school include a babysitter’s workshop in April.
