Special to The PREVIEW
You’ve been waiting for it all winter, and it’s finally here — Rotary’s “Casino Night” — this Saturday night from 6 until 10 at the Ross Aragon Community Center.
It’s a healthy way to cap off your weekend. In a recent announcement, the Federal Institute of Mental Health’s spokesperson, Ms. Ima Nuss, noted that “It is important for all our citizens to partake generously of the four essential fun groups — dancing, casino gambling, gourmet food, and stylish dress.”
In an unexpected reference to the Pagosa Rotary Club’s “Casino Night,” she underscored the fact that this annual event had ample helpings of each of those four essential fun groups.
While on the subject of health, one should not ignore the enormous psychological benefits which flow into each attendee from knowing she/he has made an important personal contribution to the $20,000 in scholarships which the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club gives annually to local high school graduates. That’s where the majority of the $40/person admission ticket goes.
One of the more stylin’ couples from last year’s Hollywood-themed “Casino Night,” David and Mary Helen Cammack, are said to be under enormous pressure to create both costumes and a dance routine to nail this year’s “Dancing with the Stars” theme.
Celebrated menu magician LaQuita Johnson and her celebrity chefs are carefully guarding this weekend’s culinary fare. They will only say that it will match — nay, exceed — last year’s five-star offering. Can that be possible?
Casino-meister Bob Eggleston says that watching the zanily dressed locals ply their skills at the blackjack, Texas Hold ‘em, and craps tables is worth the price of admission. Some are a hoot to watch. Others are taking it oh-so-seriously. But, everybody’s enjoying it and having a great time.
And who will be the dancing queens and kings of this weekend’s “Dancing with the Stars?” Maybe you. So be sure to be there Saturday night at 6 p.m. at the Ross Aragon Community Center. People watching at its delightful best.
