Special to The PREVIEW
Fall is the best time of year for being in the woods and how better to enjoy perfect weather, incredible leaves changing colors and crisp mountain air?
Run as far as you can, that’s how!
Come take a run through some of the most remote and pristine old-growth forest in the region. The climbs are great, topping out at just over 9,800 feet in elevation with more than 5,000 feet of vertical gain in the 50k and 8,300 feet of gain in the 50 mile.
Run it, if you can!
This ultra off-road course visits several mountain areas to the west of Turkey Springs — Chris Mountain, Middle Mountain, Horse Mountain and Devil Mountain.
The terrain is nothing short of spectacular. It’s the perfect location for a fall run. Incredible views, single-track and amazing people to run with and cheer you on from the aid stations!
Not quite ready to run 31 or 50 miles? The half marathon course is new this year, Offering a trail race on single-track that is beautiful and challenging — and did we did we say beautiful? It offers much more single-track and technical terrain. (For those that ran it last year we’ve taken out most of the “Road From Hell!”) so come on out and run.
Last year, we added a bonfire and casual party at the finish line to keep the running community together and allow friends and family to be involved in the awards and finish. It was a great success and will be bigger and better this year. We will provide more food and be grillin’ brats and burgers all afternoon on Saturday. Coors has graciously provided a great assortment of cold beer, too. Of course, you don’t want to miss the pancake breakfast on Sunday morning at the awards ceremony.

GECKO has provided more than $60,000 in scholarships to area students. This would not be possible without your participation in our races and the support we get from the Town of Pagosa Springs and the community at large. Thanks for that. Now, come out and run and, if you can’t run, come out and volunteer.
