Dennis Spencer announces commissioner run

Staff Writer

Dennis Spencer has thrown his hat in the ring for the office of Archuleta County commissioner, District 3.

Spencer, who has owned a local moving company for 13 years, said he decided to run for the position after the Board of County Commissioners declined to accept a series of 11 petitions regarding the Liberty Zone movement.

“I then realized that there needs to be shift in the leadership in our county. A shift where the county commissioners take their oath of office seriously to protect the Constitution of the United States of America and the Colorado Constitution thus protecting the rights of the people, not infringing them. Being a constitutionalist conservative makes me naturally driven to protect the people’s rights,” Spencer said in an e-mail to The SUN.

If elected, Spencer said he would like to see Archuleta County prosper and be free, stating, “Local government is the key to Liberty. Even if our nation were to go all out totalitarianism, our rural community, with deep rooted conservative values, can reclaim our individual rights here at the county level. My goal is see Archuleta County be the one of the freest counties in the United States which will bring us prosperity.”

Spencer said he believes the biggest challenge he would face in the position is to educate the public on their rights and how to protect them, and said he hopes to eliminate “red tape and excessive regulation.”
