David Allen Sterner was born on Nov.17, 1956, in Callaway, Neb., to Marvin and Esther (Murray) Sterner. He graduated from Anselmo-Merna High School in 1975. He attended Kearney State College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in science. After graduation, David taught science for several years. David moved to Wray, Colo., to live with his uncle Louie, where he sold fire protector equipment. David then worked for 20-plus years as the manager of numerous landfills throughout Nebraska and Colorado, with 17 years working at the Lexington Area Landfill.
He then moved back to Colorado, where he managed the Archuleta County landfills in Pagosa Springs, Colo. While in Colorado, he met his soul mate, Susan. At the time of his death, David was employed by Downey Drilling doing water-well photography throughout Nebraska and Kansas.
Through the years, David was active in the local fire departments and the Rotary club. David was always a warm and caring person who liked to help family and friends in any way possible. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, four-wheeling in the mountains, spending time with his nephews and great nieces and collecting “David’s treasures.” David always had a smile on his face while wearing his signature bib overalls and colorful shirts. He was known to have candy in his pockets for the little ones. David was the life of the party and always ended conversations with, “Sure glad you got a chance to see me.” David was fun-loving and lived life to the fullest.
David is survived by father Marvin Sterner, of Broken Bow; two brothers, Ed Sterner, of North Platte, and Clifford (Jeri) Sterner, of Merna; special friend Susan Nossaman, of Sidney; her two daughters, Lauren Felts-Salazar and daughter Sophia, of Taos, N.M., and Liz Daniels and son Ethan, of San Antonio, Texas; three nephews, Tim (Jen) Sterner, of North Platte, Terry (Colleen) Sterner, of Merna, and Travis (Wynne) Sterner, of Merna; seven great-nieces and nephews: Jacob, Dalton, Jase, Sienna, Judd, Maggie and Devin; seven aunts and uncles; 19 cousins; and numerous other family and friends.
