Coroner releases name of woman found Wednesday

SUN Staff

A woman whose body was discovered in a ditch next to U.S. 160 just west of Pagosa Springs early Wednesday afternoon has been identified by Archuleta County Coroner Carl Macht as Cecelia Christine Ames-Soskin, 47, of Pagosa Springs.

A call was dispatched at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and personnel from the Pagosa Springs Police Department, the Archuleta County Sheriff Office, the Colorado State Patrol and the Pagosa Fire protection District, as well as Archuleta County Coroner Carl Macht, responded to the site, located across the highway from Econo Lodge.

On Wednesday, Macht said it appeared Ames-Soskin had been drinking alcohol and was walking when she, “got really, really cold and fell in the snow and couldn’t get back up.”

No time of death had been determined Wednesday afternoon, but Macht estimated Ames-Soskin died early Wednesday morning.

According to Macht in an interviewed conducted this morning, it was apparent to him that, “hypothermia was a causative factor” in Ames-Soskin’s death but he affirmed a comment made Wednesday that any further conclusions about the incident are pending the results of toxicology tests.

The incident resulted in closure of U.S. 160 in the vicinity in order to allow authorities to determine whether other factors were involved in the woman’s death. Three units of the state patrol considered the possibility a traffic-related accident might have taken place, lead investigators from the ACSO used a fire district ladder truck to take aerial photos of the scene.

Macht said the incident did not appear to related to a traffic accident, and added that an autopsy will be performed.
