Steep Canyon Rangers, still basking in the glow of the band’s recent Grammy win for Best Bluegrass Album of the Year, takes the stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College on Thursday, March 7.

Local bluegrass favorite Wild Mountain opens the show at 7 p.m.

Steep Canyon Rangers might be best recognized as the bluegrass band often fronted by comedian/musician Steve Martin. Independently, however, the quintet has garnered a well-deserved reputation for smooth vocals, smart songwriting, ferocious instrumentals and stunning harmony. The recent Grammy for the band’s latest release Nobody Knows You reinforces this reputation. Nobody Knows You is, at this writing, No. 1 on the Roots Music Chart, and No. 2 on the singles chart.

Wrote, “True bluegrass, when done well, is a thing of art and the Steep Canyon Rangers are the genre’s current Rembrandt.”

Before embarking on a world tour backing comedian/banjoist Steve Martin, Steep Canyon Rangers was nominated for two International Bluegrass Music awards in 2008 (including Album of the Year, “Lovin’ Pretty Women”) as well as named Emerging Artist of the Year in 2006 at the IBMA awards ceremony in Nashville, Tenn.

Of a performance on the road with Martin, the Chicago Tribune wrote, “When Martin graciously left the stage to the group for several songs, The Rangers went into overdrive, mixing dazzling speed with high lonesome harmonies. Nicky Sanders’ blazing fiddle-playing repeatedly stole the show, especially during an encore rendition of the bluegrass standard ‘Orange Blossom Special.’”

With albums and solo records that consistently place on the top of the bluegrass charts, Steep Canyon Rangers regularly performs to enthusiastic audiences at prestigious events such as RockyGrass, A Prairie Home Companion and Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and has shared the stage with Martin on Late Night With David Letterman, The Colbert Report and Austin City Limits.

Tickets for Steep Canyon Rangers with special guest Wild Mountain — $25/$34 — are available by calling 247-7657, or on the web at All sales final.

Showtime is 7 p.m., with doors to the Concert Hall and concessions, serving beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, opening at 6.
