Special to The PREVIEW
Please join the Pagosa Springs Community Band on July 4 at 2 p.m. for a free concert of inspiring patriotic music in celebration of our nation’s birthday. The concert will be held outdoors on the back lawn of The Springs Resort. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy some moving and spirited holiday music from your local concert band. The Pagosa Springs Community Band boasts more than 35 members and features a full range of instrumentation.
This year’s concert will feature many fine pieces. We will be playing “The Cowboys,” composed by American composer John Williams. This piece was written by Williams in 1972 as the theme song of the John Wayne movie of the same name.
“The Cowboys” embodies the American West and is particularly fitting given Pagosa Springs’ western heritage and the fact that portions of John Wayne’s films were shot in the Pagosa area. Additionally, look for other patriotic selections such as “Semper Fidelis,” “Washington Post” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” — all famous John Philip Sousa marches.
The Pagosa Springs Community Band will also be joined by vocalists from the Pagosa Springs Community Choir and St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Our guest vocalists will be singing the Pledge of Allegiance set to music with a beautiful melody. They will also perform “This Is My Country,” and a medley of our armed forces service songs which feature all branches of our military. Don’t miss these wonderful vocalists who will invoke pride in our country through their singing.
In addition to our guest vocalists, you will also enjoy the strains of the community band’s brass ensemble. Our brass quintet features Larry Elginer and Larry Baisdon on trumpet, Dan Burch on trombone, D’Ann Artis on horn and Dave Krueger on tuba. The brass quintet is always a treat and is not to be missed.
