Today, there are 11 active wildfires in the state of Colorado alone.
We are all aware that the West Fork Complex Fire is by far the largest in the state, currently at about 109,000 acres. Most of us here in Pagosa Country have been lucky enough to have not suffered severe effects of the fire.
However, while we were down here living life like “normal,” there were many brave men and women fighting the fire to keep our homes and families safe — spending weeks on end away from their own families, risking their lives in harsh conditions.
This Saturday, July 27, is Colorado Cares Day. It is typically a day of service, and this year will be used to honor the Granite Mountain Hotshots, and to show our appreciation for the firefighters and personnel from Pagosa Ranger District of San Juan National Forest, Pagosa Fire Protection District, Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management, and all of the rest who joined the fight from all over the country. That appreciation also extends to those behind the scenes, supporting our firefighters by raising money, preparing food and doing much more.
Please send letters of thanks, appreciation, pictures and/or stories to: Colorado Cares Day 2013, P.O. Box 5362, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.
