Coaches needed for Archuleta County’s Girls on the Run

By Mara Koch
Special to The PREVIEW

Girls on the Run Western Colorado is looking for volunteer coaches at schools in Archuleta County. This year, Pagosa Springs will have two sites serving third- through sixth-grade girls.

GOTR is a nonprofit organization that combines training for a 5K with a curriculum inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. This 10-week afterschool program will start the week of Sept. 8, with the new school year.

Twice-weekly lessons and activities are led by trained volunteer coaches who create a positive and safe environment for girls to learn about themselves, connect with others and contribute to the community.

Coaches do not have to be seasoned runners; coaches must have the compassion and willingness to work with girls and promote healthy habits. The GOTR season will culminate in November with the non-competitive 5K.

In 2013, more than 2,300 girls from 15 counties participated in GOTR. The Western Colorado program is one of the largest GOTR councils in the United States and Canada with one of the lowest registration fees and need-based scholarships readily available.

For more information on specific program sites, coaching requirements and training dates or the GOTR program, visit our website at www.gotrwesterncolorado.org. To volunteer with GOTR, contact Mara Koch, Archuleta County coordinator, at 946-5276.
