Special to The PREVIEW

As the seasons transition from summer into fall, many of us are going through closets and drawers and pulling out clothes we no longer wear, or are simply tired of wearing.

Perhaps we have more coats than our coat closet can comfortably hold, more scarves and sweaters than we need, blue jeans that no longer fit, children’s clothes that have been outgrown, bedding or towels that still have life left in them but are no longer used, purses that we’are tired of carrying, or T-shirts that take up too much space in the drawers.

If you are not in the mood to hold a garage sale and you would like to put these items to good use, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church has the perfect solution: Donate your items to St. Patrick’s Clothing Giveaway.

Each year in October, St. Patrick’s holds a giant clothing giveaway, at which anyone can come and take as much as they need, no questions asked.

This year’s event is on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon in the church parish hall.

The church is accepting gently-used items of clothing, bedding, children’s toys, accessories, towels, coats, sweaters, etc. at Airport Storage.  Simply tell the office staff you wish to make a dropoff for the clothing giveaway.

St. Patrick’s has always had a huge response from the community, with Pagosans bringing in clothes and other items to give away.  Last year, the giveaway had over three tons of clothes, filling every room in the building with tall stacks of clothes, toys, bedding, etc.  Those who attend will be given big trash sacks and will be told to fill them up with whatever they want or need.

“The response to this giveaway has always been one of incredulity,” said Fr. Doug Neel, rector of St. Patrick’s.  “People cannot believe that they can take“whatever they want and that they will not be judged.  They leave with such huge smiles on their faces, knowing that this year they or their children will not have to wear old worn out clothes, that they can stay warm in a beautiful almost-new coat or sweater, or that they can decorate their homes with something different.  We don’t put limits on what anyone can take.  We tell them that if they want it, take it.  If they know of someone who could not come that would like to receive it … take it!  And, interestingly enough, we always have things left over at the end of the morning.  Most people are reticent to take too much for fear of denying someone else what they might need.  It all works out in the end.”
