Special to The PREVIEW
If you are a parent of a boy or girl who loves to sing and will be in fifth through eighth grade in the upcoming school year, you will want to come and find out how your child can be a part of the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir or the new Pagosa Springs Boys Choir.
An orientation meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. in the middle school band room and will offer an opportunity for parents to find out about the exciting musical adventures available through these wonderful organizations.
Director Linda Parker will conduct the meeting for parents and students and will answer any questions you may have. She will also outline goals and describe how being a part of a youth choir can benefit your child.
The Pagosa Springs Girls Choir was launched this past school year and has had resounding success. The girls will be going to Santa Fe in June as a part of the musical educational opportunities offered by the choir.
The success of the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir has spurred an interest in forming a boys choir as well. Now, for the first time, boys will have the opportunity to enjoy participating in an all-boys choir that will offer them the same musical education and performance opportunities that the girls have been enjoying.
Membership in both groups will be selected through audition. The auditions will be held on Friday, May 16, from 4-6 p.m. and Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m.-noon in the Pagosa Springs Middle School band room.
The choirs are open to boys and girls who will be in fifth through eighth grades for the 2014-2015 school year. Public school and home-schooled students are eligible. Students will be required to be able to match pitch and imitate musical patterns. A music education background will be helpful, but not required. Rehearsals will commence at the beginning of the new school year. The girls choir will meet on Mondays from 4-5 p.m. and the boys choir will meet on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. in the middle school band room.
No audition times will be set. Students may come any time during the hours provided to audition. Students and parents will be able to enter the building from Lewis Street.
During the orientation meeting, students will be given the opportunity to learn and/or practice the audition song, “America.” The audition procedure will be explained so that the students will know exactly what to expect. There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask any questions that students and parents have about the choirs.
Tuition for the choirs is $200 per students plus a $50 charge for uniforms. There is a $10 audition fee that students need to bring at the time of the audition. If the student is selected, the audition fee will be credited to the tuition. Several payment plans for tuition are available and scholarships are available to help cover costs.
“No qualified student will be turned away because of an inability to pay,” said Parker. “If there is a need for financial assistance, we will help the family.”
Students wishing to audition can get an audition packet from their school or by calling Linda Parker at 264-1434. The Pagosa Springs Girls Choir will present their spring concert on Tuesday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church.
To find out more about this exciting opportunity for your son/daughter, plan to attend the orientation meeting on Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs Middle School band room. Entrance will be from Lewis Street. You can also call Linda Parker at 264-1434.
