I was enthused by all of the letters to the editor in Sept. 5th edition. To see in the letters from all of you writers your concerns with the state of affairs with our society, our government and the economics of this country truly gives me hope that we can make a difference for the generations to come. Again thank you all your words of wisdom.

Landfill condition http://www.pagosasun.com/2019/09/12/landfill-condition/ Thu, 12 Sep 2019 21:00:47 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=177553 Dear Editor:
I had to go to the Archuleta County landfill this past Saturday which I had not done in some time and was appalled by the condition of the facility. So appalled that I was moved to write this letter. First, we could not turn in to the landfill as we had to wait for a vehicle that was leaving as the road to access the area where you can dump your items is only wide enough for one vehicle. As you travel up this little path to the dumping pad you are greeted by various piles of open debris, some construction debris and some tree and wood waste but what was particularly disturbing was the large field of open trash.

‘Hazard County’ http://www.pagosasun.com/2019/09/12/hazard-county/ Thu, 12 Sep 2019 21:00:27 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=177551 Dear Editor:
When did Archuleta County become Hazard County? And when did we put J.D. “Boss” Hogg in charge? He who openly admits he wants to take 20% of the road maintenance budget to fund his big ol “boar’s nest”. Not to mention that this also takes money out of the Towns maintenance budget. Well go ahead Boss, our roads are in such awesome shape we probably won’t notice.

Need a change in attitude http://www.pagosasun.com/2019/09/05/need-a-change-in-attitude/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 21:00:58 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=176840 Dear Editor:
Regarding the issue of guns, we need a change in attitude. When the Second Amendment to the Constitution was signed into law in 1791, what kinds of guns were there? From my recollection, there were only Muskets for personal ownership and their purpose was hunting for food and organized militia. Since that time, the gun industry has grown and I believe that those folks who wrote our Constitution would be astonished at what is available today.

When several of my Pagosa friends learned that I was scheduled for surgery, each one asked where I was going for the procedure. When I told them I was having it done at the Pagosa Springs Medical Center, they all were astonished — assuming I would be going to a hospital in Durango, Denver or Albuquerque.

Baby Boomer http://www.pagosasun.com/2019/09/05/baby-boomer/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 21:00:43 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=176834 Dear Editor:
For quite a while I have felt guilty for my roll in society as a “Baby Boomer”. I have even apologized to my grandsons for the totally messed-up economy and political/cultural mess I believed we had caused. However, as I studied the history of our on-going economic crisis I realized that while Baby Boomers do share guilt for not adequately dealing with the mess that was left to us, we are actually not to blame for the origination of our on-going economic and cultural deterioration.

Terrorism http://www.pagosasun.com/2019/09/05/terrorism/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 21:00:32 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=176838 Dear Editor:
The authorities in Texas are saying they don’t believe that the highway shootings near Midland on Saturday were terrorism. Of course they were! Just ask any of the survivors or the families and friends of the deceased or the first responders. Mass shooters are terrorists, regardless of their citizenship, their race, their religion, their age, or their motivation.

It’s time to stay in the cave http://www.pagosasun.com/2019/09/05/its-time-to-stay-in-the-cave-3/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 21:00:07 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=176797 Editor’s note: Nobody could say it better than former SUN editor Karl Isberg. The following editorial was printed in October 2012.
It’s that time of the year.
School is back in session, the kids are in class and a familiar beast is sure to rear its ugly head. The parent beast is set to emerge from summer shelter and ravage the countryside.
