One of our longtime supporters recently informed us that a donation check sent to our Pagosa Springs P.O. Box was returned with a message that our box had been closed. This left them, and perhaps others, wondering if United Way of Southwest Colorado was still supporting Archuleta County. The answer is yes, we are alive and well and providing some exciting new opportunities in Pagosa.

The Milky Way has been incredible this week. Wow. We are part of 20% of the world’s population that lives in an area where light pollution does not obscure the ability to marvel at the night sky. Lucky us.

Energy and carbon tax bill http://www.pagosasun.com/energy-and-carbon-tax-bill/ Thu, 14 Nov 2019 22:00:46 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=191168 Dear Editor:
During a conversation made public in these letters in May of this year (for which I am thankful), one of my fellow citizens alerted me to the fact that a legislative response to our climate change problem has been introduced in the House of Representatives: HR 763. While I don’t think its passage will completely solve the mounting crisis of climate change, it does present a helpful, market-based corrective to much of our carbon-emitting economy. So I think its progress through the House is worth paying attention to.

Airport: Budget concerns http://www.pagosasun.com/airport-budget-concerns/ Thu, 14 Nov 2019 22:00:29 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=191164 Dear Editor:
With recent changes to the forecasted cost increases of the Jail/Court projects, I have to wonder if the BOCC are good stewards of taxpayer dollars? How many you have actually have read the 2019 county budget? It is available on the county website. In it, I found how some county revenues are spent that are disconcerting. One area of concern is the Airport. Page 71 of the budget states, “Our County airport is not self-sustaining.

We had expectations of inclusiveness and transparency in the process; however, in a public meeting on Oct. 29, a SUN reporter was denied access to public documents.

‘Bucket drive’ http://www.pagosasun.com/bucket-drive/ Thu, 14 Nov 2019 22:00:17 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=191162 Dear Editor:
I, and my fellow pantry workers, would really like to clarify an on-going press release error released each year from LPEA concerning local food pantries. Each year LPEA announces it’s “bucket drive” to benefit “food pantries”; I, myself, have written several letters asking for an “honest” statement from LPEA to the public; without error.

About a year ago, I was invited to attend a meeting at the CSU Extension building to talk about the food pantry that belongs to our church. I participated in the meeting, met many people in the food industry in Pagosa Springs. I spoke to the group about the items that we provide to our recipients in need of food. In the conversation, I happened to mention that the church really needed can openers for travelers and homeless folks that come to the food pantry daily.

Response to letter http://www.pagosasun.com/response-to-letter/ Thu, 07 Nov 2019 22:00:49 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=190594 Dear Editor:
In the 10/31 SUN Letters to the Editor, Dave Blake quotes U.S. Attorney General Barr as saying “In the Framer’s view, free government was only suitable and sustainable for a religious people. Militant secularists today do not have a live-and-let live spirit — they are not content to leave religious people alone to practice their faith. Instead, then seem to take a delight in compelling people to violate their conscience.” Blake then writes ‘Not so.’ Newsflash to Mr. Blake: Militant secularists ongoingly attack people with deeply held religious beliefs, such as Colorado baker Jack Phillips who is continually being persecuted for refusing to bake cakes that violate his religious beliefs.

Is there any doubt in anyone’s mind that Pelosi or Schiff would have sabotaged the mission that killed the leader of ISIS? Of course not; that is exactly how they operate and everyone knows it. To the leaders of the democratic party, sacrificing our heroic protectors is perfectly acceptable if it results in egg on the face of the current commander in chief. Who, by the way, is ten times as smart as he appears.

Not so long ago, this community “came together” and raised the needed funds to provide a “top notch” medical center for our people and all who come here — it is a shining star today, serving the health needs of all.
