A wise Jewish Buddhist once gently chided me, “Glenn, when you point your finger at someone, three fingers point back at you.” She added “And your thumb is the witness.”

‘Love is the perfect weapon’ http://www.pagosasun.com/love-is-the-perfect-weapon/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 21:43:11 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=206698 Dear Editor:

Over 20 yeas ago while serving as an EMT with our ambulance service, I experienced the power of love which I will never forget. We responded to a young man, sitting on the sidewalk in town, obviously sick. He refused to allow us to assess him or care for him. I went over, placed my hand on his shoulder and asked, “Sir, will you get on the ambulance with me?” He answered. “Well, OK, but I’m calling the shots”. “OK”

Masks: ‘Stop the insanity’ http://www.pagosasun.com/masks-stop-the-insanity/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 21:39:39 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=206692 Dear Editor:

I feel a recent letter to the editor needs to be addressed. The writer asks “why are we hurting our kids to keep old people alive a little longer? As a physician, I am concerned about such a statement. Who is an old person? A person 60 or 70 may well live to be 80. Ten or twenty years is a significant number to the “old” person, their spouse and family. Hurting our children? I have not seen any statistics where children are damaged for life by understanding the seriousness of the COVID pandemic. As adults, it is our responsibility to teach our children what this pandemic is about and reassure them that with some sacrifices now, the pandemic will pass. They should be reassured that following guidelines set by our medical experts will give them the best chance of not becoming infected.

‘Disregard of everyone’ http://www.pagosasun.com/disregard-of-everyone/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 21:38:58 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=206690 Dear Editor:

Remember when anyone could exercise his/her “freedom” and “right” to smoke anywhere, anytime, regardless of other people’s freedom and right to breathe smoke-free air? Well, now it’s about masks. Those who wear them are essentially saying they care about themselves and others. Those who don’t wear masks send a clear message of their disregard of everyone else except themselves.

Not worth protecting http://www.pagosasun.com/not-worth-protecting/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 21:38:22 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=206688 Dear Editor:

I’ve seen two letters so far that I find, at the least, selfish. In both cases they are saying that continuing some restrictions, per the COVID pandemic, so as to protect the elderly are unnecessary. They point out that this section of our population are at risk but shouldn’t be protected simply because they don’t want the restrictions on themselves anymore. They use their children as a reason for the complaint instead of actually applying it to themselves. This group of people state that the elderly are not worth protecting. There was a pertinent statement from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” that comes to mind when Scrooge is confronted by two representatives of the local poor rescue association.

Establishing a local health department http://www.pagosasun.com/establishing-a-local-health-department/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 21:37:39 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=206686 Dear Editor:

I read with considerable interest your article in the June 18th edition of the Sun about Commissioner Maez and Commissioner Schaaf wanting to explore the possibility of establishing a local health department. I fully support that effort. I have only had one experience with the San Juan Basin Public Health department and it was incredibly negative.

Collateral damage http://www.pagosasun.com/collateral-damage-2/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 21:36:36 +0000 http://www.pagosasun.com/?p=206684 Dear Editor:

I am worried about collateral damage to school kids from the Covid-19 War.

So far, this strange war has caused major changes in the way education is delivered, from K-12 and beyond. Most kids these days are computer savvy after having worked with various forms of them from early childhood. The Powers That Be in the Lofty Towers of Academia, probably in or about D.C., are probably brainstorming new and radical paradigms for educating our youth. One extreme might be to replace live teachers with computerized robots that could easily be programmed to eliminate diverse ideas, creating immutable Schtandardz (sic) enforced by a small group with a strong radical Leftist Outlook. So, what can a live teacher do that a computer cannot do? One thing human teachers can do is to care about young people.
